Art Institute Group of the Merrimack Valley Annual Show

The Art Institute Group of the Merrimack Valley will be holding their 9th annual show from Wednesday, October 27th through Saturday, November 6th.  I will be unveiling three new works at the show.

Taylor Sawmill Completed

Taylor Sawmill in Derry, New Hampshire, is a water powered, vertical sawmill and operates during the summer months.  It’s open two Saturdays a month, and when the water behind the dam is high enough to turn the overshot wheel.

Painting Demonstration at the Greater Salem Artists Association Meeting

Painting Demonstration

The Greater Salem Artists Association will kick off the 2010 – 2011 season with their first meeting at the Salem NH Public Library, 234 Main Street, Salem NH.  The meeting is on Thursday, September 9th at 6:30 PM in the lower meeting room.

I will be doing a painting demonstration immediately following the business meeting and light refreshments. I will focus on the methods I use to produce a variety of painting surfaces on store-bought canvas and cotton duck.  I will show the various steps and tools I use to prepare canvas with a variety of textures and degrees of smoothness.  The demonstration will show how important a well prepaid ground is to increase the ease and pleasure of painting in acrylics.  I am also the mini-exhibitor and will have three newly completed works on display that show the results of this kind of careful canvas preparation.

Additionally, I will demonstrate how I prepare painted backgrounds as a base for still life or other paintings. If there is time, I will also show how I use under-painting with complementary colors to add vibrancy and life to any painting.

Here is one of my new works that will be on display.  It is Taylor’s Sawmill in Derry, NH, and this work is about 80% complete.

Mann Apple Orchard, 27 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen, MA, is holding their annual Customer Appreciation Week from Monday, August 30th through Sunday, September 5th.

I will be doing a painting demonstration on Saturday, September 4th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. I will also have several paintings and fine art note cards available for purchase.

Painting of Taylor Sawmill Started

I began a painting of the Taylor Sawmill in Derry NH. This is a water powered, vertical sawmill and operates two Saturdays a month when the water level is high enough. I began with a very smooth canvas and a monochrome painting of Burnt Sienna to work out the composition.

I have the sky, trees and dam roughed in; and I’m now making some structural corrections as I go along. This is one of those paintings that is going well right from the beginning. Stay tuned!

Iris Painting Complete

I finished the painting of the iris.  It is on a 20 x 24 canvas, and it is a departure from my usual style of painting.  I started with a canvas that had five coats of gesso spread on with a plastic spreader, sanded smooth after each coat was dry.

I used a series of very thin washes to build up the main flower, and a series of thin scumbles for the background trees and grasses.  I finished it off with several coats of clear acrylic matte finish.  I don’t think I used more than a tablespoon of paint for the whole work.  It has a silky smooth feel to the surface.
